Step-by-Step Guide

After an accident or loss — in order.

Call 911 if there are injuries or the road is blocked

Safety is always first. If anyone is hurt, if vehicles are blocking traffic, or if there is a hazard (fuel spill, downed lines), call 911 before anything else. Do not move injured persons unless there is immediate danger.

Document the scene

Once it is safe, photograph all vehicle damage, license plates, the full scene, road conditions, and any visible injuries. Get the other driver's name, phone, insurance company, policy number, and license number. Get contact information for any witnesses.

File a Utah crash report if required

Utah law requires you to report any crash involving injury, death, or $1,500+ in combined property damage to the Utah Driver License Division. You can file online at dld.utah.gov. Do this within 10 days.

Call your agent

Your agent can help you determine if filing a claim is financially advisable, preventing unnecessary rate hikes. Your agent can review your coverage and deductibles, offer advice, and may be able to suggest preferred contractors.

Get the repair or replacement process started

Your carrier will assign a claims adjuster who can authorize a repair shop or, for total losses, provide a settlement offer. You have the right to use any licensed shop.

Follow up and close the claim

Keep records of every conversation — adjuster name, date, what was said. If a claim drags on or you feel the offer is unfair, contact us. Independent agents can escalate with carriers in ways individual policyholders often cannot.
