What coverage limits should I choose for auto insurance?

Utah's state minimum is 25/65/15 (bodily injury per person/per accident, property damage). That is rarely enough — if you cause a multi-car accident the minimums are exhausted quickly and you're personally liable for the rest. Most of our clients choose 100/300/100 or higher, especially if they own a home or business. We walk through the numbers with every new client.

What is a deductible and how does it affect my premium?

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. A $500 comp/collision deductible means if you have a $3,000 repair, you pay $500 and your carrier pays $2,500. Higher deductibles lower your premium because you're absorbing more of the small losses yourself. We help you find the deductible level that makes financial sense for your budget and how much you drive.

What should I do immediately after an accident?

Safety first — call 911 if there are injuries or the road is blocked. Move vehicles out of traffic if safe. Swap insurance and contact information with all parties. Photograph the scene, damage, and license plates. Do not admit fault. Utah law requires you to file a crash report with the DMV anytime there is $1,500 or more in damage or any injury. Contact your agent as soon as possible — even before filing with your carrier if you have questions.

Why might my insurance lapse or get cancelled?

The most common reasons are a missed payment (even by one day with some carriers), a material change you didn't report (new driver, address change, new vehicle), or a claim that caused the carrier to non-renew. We always recommend calling us first for anything involving significant damage or liability — we can walk you through the process and make sure you don't inadvertently complicate your claim.

How often should I review my insurance coverage?

At minimum once a year, at renewal. But you should also review any time you: buy or sell a home or vehicle, start or close a business, add a teenage driver, get married or divorced, or make major renovations. Rates and carrier underwriting guidelines also change year to year — a quick annual review often saves money. We initiate that review for every client before their renewal date.

What are Utah's ATV and motorcycle insurance requirements?

Utah requires liability insurance to operate a motorcycle on public roads — minimums are the same as auto (25/65/15). ATVs operated off-highway on designated trails are not required by state law to carry insurance, but many trail systems and campgrounds require proof of coverage, and you are still personally liable for any damage you cause. We write ATV and motorcycle policies through Dairyland, Bristol West, and others — often more affordable than you'd expect.

Do I need flood insurance in the desert? What about flash floods?

Yes — Southern Utah has some of the highest flash-flood risk in the United States. The red-rock terrain channels water with almost no warning, and standard homeowners policies universally exclude flood damage. FEMA flood maps show several St. George and Washington City zip codes in moderate-to-high risk zones. Flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private carriers is a separate policy — we can quote both and explain the difference. The average flood claim in Utah is over $30,000; the average NFIP premium is a fraction of that.

What is an umbrella policy and do I need one?

An umbrella policy extends your liability coverage above the limits on your auto and home policies — typically in $1 million increments. If you cause a serious accident and your $300,000 auto liability limit is exhausted, your umbrella covers the rest up to its limit. It also covers scenarios your underlying policies don't (certain personal injury claims, for example). For families with assets to protect, an umbrella policy is one of the best values in insurance — often $200–$350 per year for $1 million in coverage.
